Shield & Shine – The Truth About Sunscreen and Smart Sun Exposure

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and there’s no better time to talk about protecting your skin while still soaking in the benefits of the sun. At Mind & Body Medspa, we believe in education, prevention, and choosing clean skincare products to help you look and feel your best. Let’s break down the facts, debunk the myths, and highlight why sunscreen should be a daily essential—all year long.

Sunlight Isn’t the Enemy

Here’s the truth: the sun is not bad for you. In fact, regular, moderate sun exposure has amazing benefits. It boosts your mood, helps regulate sleep by influencing melatonin production, and is the most natural way to increase your vitamin D levels, which supports everything from bone health to immunity.

However, unprotected and excessive sun exposure is where the danger lies. UV rays can lead to premature aging, sunburns, and increase your risk of skin cancer, the most common cancer in the United States.

Common Myths About Sunscreen & Sun Exposure

“I only need sunscreen on sunny days.”
UV rays penetrate clouds, so even on overcast days, your skin is still at risk. Sunscreen is a 365-day necessity.

“Darker skin tones don’t need sunscreen.”
While melanin offers some natural protection, no one is immune to UV damage. Skin cancer can occur in all skin types and is often diagnosed later in darker skin, making it more dangerous.

“Getting a base tan protects me.”
A tan is actually a sign of skin damage. There’s no such thing as a safe or protective tan.

“Sunscreen blocks vitamin D.”
Sunscreen may reduce vitamin D synthesis, but not enough to cause a deficiency. You can still enjoy a little morning or late afternoon sun (10–15 minutes) safely without compromising your skin health.

The Clean Sunscreen Difference

At Mind & Body Medspa, we recommend mineral-based (physical) sunscreens with clean, non-toxic ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays, rather than absorbing them like chemical sunscreens. Clean sunscreens are less irritating, better for sensitive skin, and often safer for the environment.

Look for broad-spectrum formulas that protect against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays, with an SPF of at least 30.

Safe Sun Habits

  • Wear SPF 30+ daily, even when it’s cloudy.
  • Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors or after swimming/sweating.
  • Don’t forget easy-to-miss areas like your ears, lips, scalp, and tops of your hands.
  • Wear hats, sunglasses, and UPF clothing when spending extended time in the sun.

Protecting your skin today means preserving your health and beauty for years to come. At Mind & Body, we carry medical-grade, clean sunscreens that feel good, look good, and actually protect. Let us help you choose the right one for your skin type and lifestyle.
